There we were, the Class of 1965, smack dab in the middle of the fast-paced change occurring in Naperville, Our town, our home. In 1965, with a population of 17,000, (up from 6,000, when we were born in 1947), our classmates were from a variety of families including farmers, Kroehler employees, bankers, executives, doctors, attorneys, teachers, engineers. Today, most of the farms are long gone and the factories are few. The population, in our community in the Illinois High Tech Corridor, has exploded to more than 120,00 and the executive's kids far out number all others.
In 1965 Kroehlers' whistle still blew at 3:30 p.m. the fire siren went off at 6:00 p.m. Our energized generation was working after-school-jobs, selling bonds to build "The Barn" youth center, serving in Vietnam, mapping out their futures as best they could, including starting new jobs and enrolling in colleges. Today those “Baby Boomers” have raised families, supported their schools, communities, churches, and have become productive, tax paying citizens like their predecessors. They have also given generously to this carillon with the purchase of an A# bell in the name of he Class of 1965.
They say, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Our class has certainly seen the change and can attest that the saying is true. Although we sometimes long for the past, we also recognize the hope for the future and for those things that will not change..the spirit of generosity and service to the community and the Class of ‘65’s colossal commitment to teamwork.
Ring that Bell!
